Re-Registration Process for Producers of WEEE, Batteries, and Packaging

Do you know what the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, Malta, and Romania have in common?  

In these countries, producers of WEEE, batteries, or packaging have to renew their registrations annually. The renewal of registration ensures that the authorities and compliance schemes have the most up-to-date company details of the producer.

In the Republic of Ireland, the process for re-registration depends on the producer’s setup. Renewal has to be done with the national authority and the compliance scheme or through an authorized representative in the case of foreign producers. Producers must have completed their renewals with the federal administration within the month of January. The procedure for renewing registrations with the compliance scheme may vary from one operator to another.  

The process in the United Kingdom differs depending on whether a producer is considered a large or small producer. Large producers are registered via their compliance schemes in October/November for the coming year. Small producers either re-register directly with the Environment Agency, or their compliance scheme does it in January for the new compliance year. The thresholds that determine being a small or large producer are, in the case of WEEE, five tonnes of WEEE per year, whereas for batteries, it is one tonne batteries per year placed on the UK market in the previous compliance year. As for packaging, producers who exceed the threshold of 50 tonnes PACK per year with an annual turnover of more than 2 Million GBP must always register with a compliance scheme. 

Finally, in Malta and Romania, all producers must register annually, independent of their setup or the volume of products they put on the market. The schemes assume the re-registration with the authorities, except in the case of packaging producers in Malta, which are below the threshold of 100 kg packaging per year. They must directly register themselves with the authorities. This period of re-registration takes place in the first quarter of the year. In Romania, producers receive a new registration number and must update it in their respective documentation. In other countries, the registration numbers remain the same.
