The District of Columbia has enacted the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Act of 2014. The Act requires manufacturers of covered electronic equipment, whose products are sold in the District, to register and participate in a recycling program. Covered electronic equipment covered under the Act and accepted at events includes: desktop and laptop computers, tablets, E-readers, small-scale servers, portable digital music players that are battery powered, computer monitors, mice, keyboards, computer speakers, desktop printers, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, DVRs, signal converter boxes, cable and satellite receivers, and gaming consoles used with TVs. In addition to covered electronic equipment, mobile phones will also be accepted free of charge at events.
Please note the following items will not be accepted: batteries, light bulbs, smoke detectors, CDs, floppy disks, VHS tapes, USB drives, external storage devices, house or office phones, household appliances, small appliances such as blenders & vacuums, paints, chemicals, medications, children’s toys, toys with batteries, remotes or controllers, plastic bags, Styrofoam or original packaging, cardboard boxes, plastic tote bins, taped cables or products, white goods, air conditioners, UPS or battery backups, networking equipment, hubs, modems, routers, thermostats, ink & toner, lamps, ballasts, fire extinguishers, compressed gas cylinders, dehumidifiers, humidifiers, cables, cords, wires, laptop bags or carrying cases, musical instruments, amplifiers or stereos, non-computer speakers, DJ or karaoke equipment.
