Battery take-back in Denmark
Denmark’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for batteries, , is a regulatory framework aimed at managing the environmental impact of batteries throughout their lifecycle. Under this system, producers are responsible for the collection, treatment, and recycling of batteries once they become waste. Producers, which distribute portable batteries, are legally obliged to appoint a local scheme to handle the above tasks on their behalf. Foreign companies are also obligated to appoint an AR – Authorized Representative. RLG RENE is offering these services.
Reasons to Prioritize Environmental Compliance:
- Improving the collection and recycling rates of batteries and electronic waste
- Minimizing the volume of waste directed to landfills
- Encouraging the sustainable use of resources
- Minimizing use of virgine, rare materials
- Securing the recycling of critical materials
Who are the stakeholders?
- Producers and Importers: Companies that make or bring batteries into Denmark.
- Retailers and Distributors: Businesses selling batteries or products with batteries.
- Producers of Battery-Containing Products: Organizations that produce or import electronics products with built-in batteries.
Scope of batteries included
The EPR framework in Denmark covers a broad range of batteries to ensure comprehensive environmental management. The types of batteries included in the legislative scope are:
Portable batteries
Automotive batteries
Industrial batteries
This comprehensive scope ensures that all major categories of batteries are managed responsibly from production to disposal, promoting a circular economy and reducing environmental harm.
Battery Tax for Portable Batteries in Denmark
In addition to Denmark’s Battery EPR requirements, producers who distribute portable batteries must register with the Danish Tax and Customs Administration (SKAT) to pay a specific sales tax on these items. This sales tax is separate from the environmental fees paid to compliance schemes and is crucial for responsible battery waste management. RLG provides comprehensive support for registration and tax reporting to help ensure compliance.
