Performance Report 2023: REBAT with Stable Results
- After a phase of above-average growth, the quantities placed on the market and collected are back to a normal level.
- Collection rate (gross) stands at 56.50%.
- REBAT is already well-prepared for the planned increase in the collection rate by 2027.
Aschheim/Munich, 15th May 2024 | REBAT, the take-back system for portable batteries in Europe, records a decrease in quantities placed on the market for the first time after years of continuous growth. While the sale of batteries, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, had increased significantly, a return to a normal level is evident for the year 2023.
Despite the decrease in quantities placed on the market, the collection amount in 2023 remained relatively stable at 16,744 tons (t). The legally required collection rate of 50% since 2021 was significantly exceeded, reaching 56.50% (gross). Through the voluntary transfer of 1,400 tons (t) of collected quantities with market peers, the collection rate reduces to 51.63%, once again surpassing the legally required target.
Trend towards Rechargeable Li-Ion Accumulators?
Andreas Kröniger, Executive Vice President, commented on the results: “We experienced the largest decline in the chemical systems of Alkaline-Manganese and Zinc-Carbon, while the decline in rechargeable accumulators was a relatively modest decrease. This may indicate a trend where end consumers are increasingly opting for accumulators.”
REBAT Prepared for the Future
Approximately 6,200 connected manufacturers of the REBAT system placed 26,810 t of portable batteries on the market last year. The REBAT collection network continues to grow and now includes over 64,000 active collection points. Overall, REBAT is expected to maintain its position as the largest collection system for portable batteries in Europe.
Despite the lower collection volume, Kröniger remains optimistic: “If we solely consider the year 2023, excluding resale, we would have achieved a collection rate of 62.46%. Therefore, we are already well-prepared for the planned increase in the collection rate to 63% in 2027. This is possible thanks to the close cooperation with our system partners. Without them, such success would not have been achievable.”
REBAT+ Exceeds 100% Collection Rate Again
REBAT+ achieved a collection rate of 122.4%, significantly surpassing the set target of 100%. The premium collection system by RLG offers connected manufacturers shortened collection deadlines and access to special safety containers. Additionally, REBAT+ can tailor its services to the specific needs of manufacturers and collection points.
The detailed REBAT success monitoring with detailed figures will be published in the coming weeks.
