RLG Expert Presents at SPC Packaging EPR Collaborative
Business Development Manager Rebecca Schwartz Altholz presented to the Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s Packaging EPR Collective on Earth Day, April 22 to discuss packaging EPR with a range of attendees, including packaging manufacturers and brands.
Rebecca offered an overview of updates to packaging EPR laws, including updates about Maryland and Washington, which have both advanced packaging laws.
She then led the group of 130 attendees through an interactive exercise regarding reporting specifications based on packaging EPR regulations, with many guesses as to what materials are considered packaging, what aspects of materials need to be reported, and what other factors influence reporting requirements.
She also led producers through fee schedule comparisons for two states with packaging EPR laws in order to demonstrate how having a solid grasp of packaging data can lead to significant savings in EPR fees.
Finally she offered a case study on how RLG customers are using packaging data to drive business intelligence that leads to cost savings and packaging reductions.

Questions included:
- Are stickers or tape covered by packaging EPR laws?
- What should a producer do if they don’t know where products are being sold after distribution?
- How are packaging EPR laws being enforced?
In reaction to the timing of the presentation with SPC, Rebecca remarked, “It’s great to be able to be with you all today on Earth Day, because it helps remind us why we’re here.”
