RLG Presents at the 2025 MWA Spring Workshop

The 2025 Municipal Waste Association (MWA) Spring Workshop brought together over 180 municipalities – representing more than 10 million Ontarians – for two days of shared learning and conversation about the future of waste management in the province. Held in Huntsville, ON, this annual event continues to be a valuable space for municipal and industry leaders to tackle the evolving challenges and opportunities in waste, recycling, and landfill diversion.

EPR in the Spotlight

One of the main topics this year was Ontario’s ongoing shift to Full Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for blue box recycling, which takes full effect on January 1, 2026. Circular Materials led a key session unpacking the details of the transition and offering guidance on what municipalities can expect as the new system rolls out.

RLG’s Director of Operations, Catherine McCausland, led the session titled “Transition is Complete: Now What?” Her presentation focused on how RLG is helping municipalities navigate this major change and highlighted the need for continued collaboration. The session sparked lively discussion about preparedness, responsibilities, and what comes next.

Battery Safety Takes Center Stage

Battery safety was another major theme at this year’s workshop – municipalities have an important role to play in battery and electronics collection networks, and are seeking solutions to manage the risks associated with collecting and handling damaged, defective, or recalled lithium-ion batteries and electronic devices. The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal shared valuable insights into the fire hazards and safety concerns related to this activity.

At the event, RLG and Call2Recycle Canada announced a new partnership focused on improving safety for municipalities. As part of this initiative, RLG introduced the LiSa Box – Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Box – a practical solution designed to make the collection, storage, and transportation of lithium-ion batteries and devices safer for everyone involved.

Looking Ahead

RLG was proud to be part of the 2025 MWA Spring Workshop and continues to support municipalities through these important transitions. With the full EPR shift just around the corner and safety issues becoming more urgent, it’s clear that strong collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential for building a smarter, safer, and more sustainable waste management system.
