WEEE take-back in Denmark
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a regulatory framework in Denmark, implemented under the “Executive Order on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment 1566/2022”. This regulation is designed to address the environmental impact of electronic waste. Obligated stakeholders will be legally required to fulfil compliance processes for the WEEE they place on the Danish market.
Why focus on environmental compliance:
- Increasing the collection and recycling rates of electronic waste
- Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill
- Promoting the sustainable use of resources
Who are the stakeholders?
Under Denmark’s EPR system, producers and importers of electrical and electronic equipment are responsible for managing the waste generated by their products throughout their entire lifecycle, including collection, recycling, and safe disposal.
- Producers: any entity that manufactures or sells electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in Denmark.
- Importers: companies importing electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).
- Retailers: Retailers who sell electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).
- Distance Sellers: Online sellers who sell to Danish consumer.
- Branding Holders: Companies that license their brand for electrical and electronic products sold in Denmark may also have responsibilities.
Ensuring Compliance with WEEE Regulations
Compliance with WEEE regulations is critical for all obligated stakeholders to manage electronic waste responsibly. This includes accurate reporting, effective waste management, and adherence to regulatory requirements. Annual audits are essential to verify compliance and ensure that all processes are being followed correctly.
An annual WEEE audit in Denmark is obligatory for certain producers, depending on turnover and number of employees.
